CHALLENGE
Translating Neuroaesthetics research into a creative publication for creatives across hospitality and design
As time spent indoors rises, the built environment's impact on wellbeing grows. Despite the growing Neuroaesthetics research, applying it into practical insights and hospitality design remains a challenge. This report bridges the gap, translating the science into actionable design strategies for hoteliers and designers, empowering them to create spaces that nurture wellbeing.
CREATIVE CONCEPT
Translating Neuroaesthetics insights into a design framework to apply into the built environment
The groundbreaking report translated Neuroaesthetics research into four key design pillars: Belonging, Community, Transformation, and Longevity. Centred around designing for emotion, each pillar works with neuroscience, culture and design research to transform spaces beyond functional settings into meaningful environments to support key areas for our social needs - connection and community to encourage personal growth, and support the long term care for our planet.
EXECUTION
A 68-page report with 56 examples and expert interviews from 4 key leaders in diverse fields.
This comprehensive report included interviews with leaders like Dr Anjan Chaterjee, Suchi Reddy and Refik Anadol. Transforming the ways we think about how our built environments support personal, social and planetary wellbeing, it included large scale research, in-depth analysis, and expert interviews “Neuroaesthetics - Design for the Mind” became a groundbreaking publication downloaded over 2000 times worldwide.
People spend up to 90% of their time indoors, and the aesthetics of our built environments profoundly impact our wellbeing. Yet we have only scratched the surface of what is possible when we marry the science with the execution of design, programming and culture.

Our transdisciplinary research methods paired academic insights across neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and sociology, with cultural data, design trends, and expert interviews.

Using a custom Science-Informed Design technique, these insights were collated and mapped against five impact pillars: health, social, environmental, economic, and creative—and synthesised into design tools for understanding and application.

It included 108 citations from academic and cultural sources, 5 expert interviews with academics, architects, artists, engineers, and sensory designers and a survey of 1,789 Design Hotels community members in June 2023.

This report serves as a practical guide for designers and hoteliers to apply Neuroaesthetics research. By prioritising wellbeing through design, this publication has helped unite academics, architects and community builders to reshape the future of design, catalysing innovation by fusing science, technology and creative design.
“It's been incredibly exciting to work with Kinda Studios and FSB on this new cultural study ... Through this deep dive into neuroaesthetics, we are developing a wider understanding of how aesthetics, culture, and technology can converge to shape our cognitive and emotional landscapes – and create more impactful, purpose-led spaces in the process.”
